From Monday, June 25 through Friday, June 29, the Mackinaw Area Historical Society and the Mackinaw City Area Arts Council will collaborate to sponsor a five-day Discovery Camp, with the support of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. Camp will begin at 9:00 each morning, adjourning at 3:00pm.

Children entering the 4th through 7th   grades will be exposed to a variety of art, local history, music and science experiences, led by Linda Rogers, Camp Director and educator, and several adult volunteers. The five (5) fun-filled days will include local tours, organized activities, and crafting projects.

Each day will focus on a different topic and will include field trips that are relevant to the topic of the day. Monday will take them on a Scavenger Hunt and a tour of the statues of prominent members of our community and the DIA Inside/Art exhibit;  Campers will visit Wilderness State Park on Tuesday where they will learn about the history of the park and explore adventures within the park; Wednesday will concentrate on the Anishinabek community and its’ culture within Heritage Village; Thursday the campers will visit the Lighthouse Museum in Mackinac State Historic Park, followed by a tour of the new EMS facility: and Friday they will experience “Theatre” in Heritage Village. Each day will include crafts, storytelling, and singing, and each day will wrap up with students recording their daily adventures in a Journal provided as part of the program package.

Discovery Camp provides a hands-on learning opportunity very inexpensively so that students will get to know their communities a little bit better with the hope that they will want to learn even more and will come to realize what a unique place in the world we enjoy at the Straits of Mackinac. We are hoping to inspire learners who want to become advocates for and stewards of this special place we call home.

Tuition per child is $35.00, payable to MAHS. Camp registrations are limited to 24 students. Registration forms are available through the Historical Society’s web site www.mackinawhistory.org

and/or www.mackinawcityareaartscouncil.org.
