EXPERIENCE THE YEARS OF GREAT CHANGE

These majestic black horses are Percheron & are new this year.

We had a foggy day this year.

Lots of fun wagon rides.

These brown beauties are new this year. They are Belgium horses.

Each student has a turn at the plow.

Heritage Village hosts an annual event each year in May where we enjoy “The Plowing of the Fields.” Third graders from Mackinaw Public Schools and the senior citizens from Pinecrest Village join us to learn about and participate in grooming horses, plowing and discing, and draying the fields with horses pulling the plows.

Scott Ward, owner of Horses and Carriages of Harbor Springs and creator of this annual event, brings his horses, most of them Percheron now retired from farm work. The horses are used to tour Bay View and Harbor Springs, and lead carriages and sleighs for private parties and parades. The children participate in shoeing the horses and learn about how logging was done with horses and when the fields were prepared the old fashioned way, they then plant potatoes, corn, sunflowers and squash.  We end our fun filled day with hayrides around the Village.  It is a day for old and young to come out and enjoy Heritage Village and learn what it was like when planting involved horses.

All are welcome to join us for this free event.

Donations are welcome.
