Preserving Mackinaw’s Living History: Exciting Updates from the Mackinaw Area Historical Society
As we celebrate our 10th year of preserving Anishinaabe and local history at Heritage Village, the Mackinaw Area Historical Society (MAHS) continues to grow, restore, and inspire. From new art installations to community events and educational programs, there’s never been a better time to explore Mackinaw’s rich cultural heritage.
Heritage Village: Where History Comes Alive
Nestled in the heart of Mackinaw City, Heritage Village is more than a museum—it's a living story of Northern Michigan’s past. Our volunteers have been busy restoring buildings, enhancing signage, and maintaining the grounds after the recent ice storm. Visitors will now find new safety markers along the trails reminding hikers to watch for falling limbs.
New Projects and Additions
Our dedicated volunteers and board members have launched several exciting initiatives this year:
Art Trail Expansion – We’ve added new art pieces to our outdoor trail. If you know a local artist interested in contributing, contact MaryAnn Moore to join our creative community.
Waganogan Dedication – Our replica Native American summer home—a traditional waganogan—is complete! Join us for the ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 26 at 10 a.m.
Train Depot Project – Plans are underway to relocate a historic building to serve as our new Heritage Village Train Depot.
Aviary Educational Kiosk – In partnership with With Feathers, a local bird rehabilitation organization, we’re creating an interactive learning space dedicated to Michigan’s native birds.
Sawmill Exhibit Update – The sawmill will soon feature a refreshed educational display.
Dixie Monument Replica – Plans are being discussed for a replica of the beloved Dixie Monument—stay tuned for updates!
Celebrate 10 Years of the Medicine Wheel
This year also marks the 10th anniversary of our Medicine Wheel, a sacred and educational site honoring the Anishinaabe people. We invite everyone to visit and reflect on the deep cultural roots that make Mackinaw’s history so meaningful.
