Mackinaw City, MI — September 23, 2025 — The Mackinaw Area Historical Society (MAHS) is pleased to announce that the Village of Mackinaw City Council has approved the addition of a seasonal docent to serve at Heritage Village. The decision, made during the council meeting on September 18, marks an important step toward expanding visitor engagement and educational opportunities at the beloved historic site.

The new role will provide an on-site guide to help visitors explore the 19th-century community, answer questions, and interpret the site’s many exhibits. By offering a more interactive and informed visitor experience, the docent program underscores both the Village and MAHS’s shared commitment to preserving and sharing Mackinaw’s rich history.

“Having a seasonal docent at Heritage Village represents a wonderful step forward for our organization and for the community,” said MAHS President Angie Morthland. “Our board is incredibly excited about what this means for expanded hours and the opportunity to welcome even more people to experience Mackinaw’s history firsthand.”

The addition of a docent reflects a broader vision for Heritage Village—enhancing educational programming, deepening historical interpretation, and ensuring that visitors leave with a richer understanding of life in the Straits area more than a century ago.

With the support of the Village Council, MAHS continues to strengthen Heritage Village’s role as both a community resource and a destination for cultural tourism. The seasonal docent will be stationed during key times of the year, aligning with the region’s vibrant tourism season.

Heritage Village remains free and open to the public, offering a glimpse into the region’s past through restored buildings, period demonstrations, and community events.
